Getting Started With The Bible
A workshop with Dr. Gregory Ryan for the Year of the Word to develop deeper understanding about reading the bible.
Sacred Heart Hillsborough
10am – 1pm in the Church Hall
2020 is “the Year of the Word” for Catholics in England and Wales – and we are all invited to focus more on the Bible in our lives and faith. But this can be challenging. In this half-day session, Dr Greg Ryan (Director of Adult Formation for Hallam Diocese, and Assistant Professor at Durham University’s Centre for Catholic Studies) looks at how we can get started with the Bible, and at different ways of reading the scriptures in our busy lives.
The workshop includes illustrated talks, discussions, and practical exercises designed to ignite our curiosity and passion for reading the scriptures afresh.
During the day we’ll look at the following topics:
Picking up the Bible – where to start?
What is in the Bible?
What kind of things is it?
Where – and when – was it written?
Who wrote it – and why?
Reading the Bible – tricky challenges and big problems
Ways of reading for study, prayer, and life.
Useful resources for trying it out and going deeper.
There will be tea, coffee, and biscuits refreshments available
All are welcome – Admission free
